Voice Lesson Information/FAQ

What can I expect to learn in voice lessons?

What styles of music do you teach?

I have found the best genre of music for developing a good singing voice is Classical, but I also believe a singer should be versatile, so we work on music in other genres, such as Musical Theatre, Jazz, Folk, Opera, Pop and R&B, depending on the interests of the student.

What ages do you teach?

I am happy to teach students over the age of ten. There is no upper limit!

Where do you teach?

I have a home studio in Maineville, Ohio. I also teach at the Hope Church School of Music in Mason, Ohio, and at the Loveland Music Academy in Loveland, Ohio.

What performance opportunities do you provide?

We have two studio recitals each year—usually one in early November, and the other in early May. I also provide students with information regarding auditions, competitions and area singing groups.

How much music will I need to purchase?

When students begin vocal study, they usually need at least two contrasting music books to provide them enough material. An estimate of music costs for the first year of lessons would range from $25 to $75 depending upon the progress, age and ambition of the student.

Can I have visitors?

Parents are welcome to observe a lesson anytime they wish with the student’s permission. However, you should understand that with some students this will be an unnatural situation and they will not be as relaxed and responsive as they usually are. You may feel free to call me to discuss the vocal progress of your son or daughter at any time. Friends and/or siblings are welcome as long as they are not a distraction to the student.

How much do I need to practice?

At the very minimum 3 times a week for at least 20 minutes. The more you practice, the faster progress you will make, so I highly recommend practicing as much as possible—for intermediate to advanced students, 5-6 times a week for an hour is optimal.

How long is the typical lesson?

Lessons are offered in 30, 45, and 60-minute increments. The students’ availability, their level of experience and their goals are some of the factors that help determine what amount of time is best.
